Wine Tasting In Mallorca
Why is the island so good for growing grapes and making wine?
Mallorca boasts a desirable climate year-round, creating a micro-climate that is ideal for cultivating high-quality grapes essential for exceptional wine production. The unique characteristics of the island's soil further enhance grape growth, contributing to the region’s burgeoning wine scene. Visitors can explore a variety of wineries, from large commercial enterprises to charming family-owned establishments, offering options to suit all preferences.
During my visit to a small family-run winery just outside Alcudia, I participated in an organized tour, although independent tours can also be arranged. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted and immediately offered our first glass of wine to taste, with a total of three different tastings throughout the experience. After sampling the wines, we were guided through the vineyards where we learned about the grape-growing process and the specific care taken to produce their wines.
The vines and grapes
The exceptional quality of the soil and the abundance of sunshine contribute significantly to the perfection of the grapes used in wine production. Grapes thrive throughout most of the year, as they are cultivated in a climate that encourages growth beyond traditional seasons.
what happends after the grapes are picked?
After the meticulous selection of grapes in September, they are pressed and transferred to temperature-controlled tanks for fermentation. Following this process, the wine is placed into new barrels crafted from fine-grain French oak, where it will mature for a period of 6 to 30 months, with red wines typically requiring a longer aging duration. The use of wooden barrels is essential, as it enhances the flavor profile and promotes the development and maturation of the wine, allowing it to breathe naturally.
Then it is time for bottling. Smaller winemaking establishments typically bottle on an annual basis and often rent mobile bottling machinery. In contrast, larger companies own their own equipment. After the wine is bottled, it rests for at least a month before being made available for sale. Following this process, we were offered more wine and tapas, and we had the opportunity to purchase some bottles.
Final thoughts
Visiting the vineyard offered a delightful experience, allowing us to explore the cultivation of grapes and understand the winemaking process. The venue, though small, exuded a welcoming atmosphere. With an intimate group of visitors, our inquiries were thoroughly addressed, enhancing our understanding. Additionally, we enjoyed a generous selection of wines to taste, making the visit both educational and enjoyable.
